CRUNCH VS. SWERVE: BATTLE OF I-71 PREVIEW!

 




  The Major League Indoor Soccer season may have kicked off last weekend, but this weekend it heats up with a early rivalry game. The Cleveland Crunch and Cincinnati Swerve will square off and renew their rivalry and see who will have bragging rights over I-71. With that being said, let's take a look at the match-up between the two teams.



CINCINNATI SWERVE:


Head coach: Manny Adjei

Players to watch: Riley Mckenzie, Corey Whisenhunt, Joseph Grimes, Eddie Zavala, Andrej Novakovic

record: 0-1

Overall: The Swerve fell in their opener last week 8-1 to Rapid City FC. The Swerve will look to improve on defense and get more stops. The Swerve had opportunities to score, but most chances were thwarted when the shots were taken. This week the Swerve will look to improve their offensive opportunities and turn the breakaways into goals scored.





CLEVELAND CRUNCH:

Head coach: Benny Dargle

Players to watch: Mike Derezic, Sammy Mutemwa, Gabe Pewu, Macain Spragling, Marijo Musa

record: first game 0-0

Overall: The core Crunch players return. The Crunch will also be showing some new players, but don't expect any drop off. The last two seasons the Crunch have averaged 17.3 goals a game. In the rivalry against the Swerve the Crunch have averaged 14.7 goals so far. 


Bottom line: The Crunch are 4-0 all-time against the Swerve. If the odds in Vegas are right and you're a betting person don't expect this to change. The Crunch are out for blood after last seasons runner-up performance and first ever undefeated season in team history(12-0). The Crunch have four championships and you can be sure they have number five in sight. We can't give you a final prediction as we will be in attendance broadcasting the game, but we can assure you with these two teams there will be fireworks and shots galore!

 Lansing, Mi     Ok, I know what you're thinking, "it's an expansion team, they're supposed to dominate them". You'd be correct if those were your thoughts, but you also have to understand that this isn't an ordinary defending championship team the Lansing Red Cedar were playing. This was the MLIS defending Champion Cleveland Crunch. to be fair to the Red Cedar, they are a very scrappy bunch and fight to the end. They play hard and may actually have the potential to become a playoff team. Unfortunately, tonight was not their night as the Crunch continued where they left off on January 11th. I'll save ed Cedar fans who read this time... If you blinked, you missed it. The Crunch started off slow, but not because of travel. The Red Cedar actually made it a tad difficult for the Crunch early in the first quarter. TAINTED VICTORY!!

 Cleveland, Ohio     First off, congrats to Rapid City Fc on their win last night. For those that were in attendance at the Soccerplex last nigh you saw a barn burner. That game had everything. Action, suspense, scoring, and even some chippiness. Pretty much everything needed to have the makings of a epic rivalry. The Problem in this game was the fact that in between the action. it wasn't called fairly. Just like in Michigan a week before there were several missed calls and Rapid City then introduced FLOPPING. It was so bad that kids under the age of 10 were noticing. This flopping was so bad that several blue and yellow cards were issued against the Crunch. Yet, no cards were issued for the clearly intentional flops nor were the refs calling the game fair in our opinion.  Is this a issue in all sports? NOT IN MY HOUSE!!!

 North Olmstead, Ohio   In the last home game until the end of the season the Crunch hosted their divisional rivals the Muskegon Risers in a pivotal match up before the Crunch hit the road. The Crunch came into the game tied with the RGV Barracudas for the leagues best record. The Crunch defended home as expected. The first quarter started off slowly before the Risers put one in the back of the net to take the lead. The Risers would hold that lead until Admir Suljevic would score with 2:08 left in the first to tie the game at 1-1. Just before the end of the first, Kurt Raney would hook up with "The Captain" David Jordan to take a 2-1 lead going into the second period.  In the second period Chris Cvecko would shoot a dime past the Risers goal keeper to give the Crunch a 3-1 lead with 7:26 left before half time.
