LAWYERS TAKE THE CLAIM, CITY CHAMPS!!!
Cleveland, Ohio
A long time ago, the John Marshall Lawyers used to be identified in the Senate league as a "stat game". Meaning if you were Collinwood, Glenville, John Hay, East High, or East Tech and you saw a west side school on your schedule you knew you as a player would have a great game. Now, With head coach Terrance Cleggett on the sideline the Lawyers have been a formidable opponent in the Senate.
In a re-match of the 2018 City Championship game John Marshall and Collinwood squared off one more time for bragging rights over the city. Before we go any further, understand that this is a bit of a championship rivalry as the Lawyers and Railroaders have faced each other 4 times in this game. The Railroaders and Lawyers played against each other in the City Championship game in 1986, 1990, 2018, and 2021. Before last Thursday, the Railroaders had held a 2-1 advantage against the Lawyers. That would all change Thursday night.
In what would be considered a packed house in the Senate, both schools showed up and supported their teams with pride. The game started as a stalemate in the first quarter, but in the second, the Lawyers would strike first blood and end the scoreless tie when Marshall safety Tavion Jackson would score on a 35-yard pick-6. The Lawyers would miss the two-point conversion but that wouldn't matter because the Lawyers would score again later in the quarter when Marshall running back Antonio Neuhoff would punch it in on a 3-yard run. Marshall would miss the two-point conversion again which would keep the game at 12-0. Just before halftime the Lawyers would again cash in on more points as Tavion Jackson would score on an 11-yard run and a successful two-point conversion to make it a 20-0 halftime lead for the Lawyers.
The second half was more of the same as Jamaree Pope would score on a 9-yard run with a missed extra point to give the Lawyers a 26-0 lead early on in the third. Later in the third, the Lawyers would get another pick-6 as Timothy Jennings would take it back 11 yards to pay dirt. With a 34-0 lead in the 4th quarter the Lawyers would score again on a Jamaree pope 3-yard run. Marshall would miss the extra point to keep it a 40-0 Marshall lead. The Railroaders would keep fighting as Collinwood quarterback Jacob Brown would find Damarcus Montgomery for beautiful 75-yard touchdown pass, but by then it was too little too late. On the ensuing kickoff Marshall would look to make a statement as E'mere Atkins would take the kickoff back 80 yards for the games final touchdown and a 46-6 victory. With the win the City Championship series between both teams is now tied at 2-2. Lawyer head coach Cleggett also received the traditional and well earned Gatorade bath.
For those that have never been to or heard about the Senate league city championship game, understand that this game has so much meaning behind it. not just for the teams, players, and coaches involved, but the city shows up as well. So much love was shown for not only both teams but the Senate players that made all- conference and honorable mention as well. A very special congratulations goes out to Rhodes head coach Robert Andrews for rightfully earning and deserving Senate league "Coach of the Year". The Senate may not be as well known or respected as it used to be, But these coaches have done a remarkable job turning their respective programs around and and grooming young men for the future!
